Established in 1960 and today boasting more than 60 coffee receiving stations across the Tarrazú region, the CoopeTarrazú cooperative is a prominent producer in this coffee-famous country.
Representing 14% of the country’s total coffee production, CoopeTarrazú is the largest coffee farming Co-op in Costa Rica. Made up of more than 4,000 smallholder farmers—the majority of whom farm areas of two hectares or smaller—the cooperative continues to grow and thrive while advocating for member farmers.
CoopeTarrazú provides a comprehensive set of services to its members, from large-scale nursery and agronomy training to financial guidance to direct-farm measures such as composted coffee pulp given back to farmers as fertilizer, and guidance in planting newer, more rust-resistant coffee varieties. The co-op itself is also diversified, investing in local businesses to generate additional, secured income to members regardless of each year’s coffee harvest. We are pleased to have sourced this coffee through our partners at Café Noble/Expocert, with whom we have been working since 2011.
Industrywide, CoopeTarrazú has gained great respect not only for its structure and farmer-forward practices, but for a quintessentially Costa Rican cup profile. With bright acidity, chocolate aroma, and a sweet, balanced cup. Swiss Water is pleased to offer this increased-traceability coffee to its customers seeking a classic, delicious coffee from Costa Rica.
