Verdant Reserves Honduras Las Capucas
Share
Las Capucas has been a favorite, year-round Swiss Water green offering since 2011, with many sustainable certifications.
Las Capucas has long been popular with our roasting partners not only for its classic, soothing flavor profile of cocoa and stone fruit, but for its many certifications, including Organic, Rainforest Alliance and Smithsonian Bird-Friendly®.
Located in the west of Honduras, near Celaque National Park, Las Capucas is a cooperative founded in 1999 by Jose Omar Rodriguez and takes its name from the nearby town of Las Capucas. (You may also see them called Capucas Café, or Cooperativa Cafetalera Capucas Limitada aka COCAFCAL.) This group was one of the first officially registered cooperatives in Honduras, though coffee has been farmed in this region since the late 19th century. In the 1960s, the primary crop here—tobacco—was replaced with more coffee. Coffee from Las Capucas is primarily Caturra, grown at 1400–1600 meters above sea level in lush soil.
As a cooperative, Capucas has been able to leverage the power of its dozen or so associated coffee farming communities to advance the prosperity and social wellness of these (and neighboring) communities. Cooperative members and their families are eligible for programs that provide financial, technical, and marketing services. The co-op has also invested in community infrastructure improvements like garbage cleanup, and educates local children on environmental stewardship. In 2024, we were pleased to be able to send our Assistant Director of Coffee, Nelson Teskey, to Las Capucas in person—where he also helped them repair their aging coffee roaster!
We are proud to continue our long relationship with Capucas in promoting the production of sustainable, socially responsible, and delicious coffee in Honduras.
