Did you know decaf coffee, like all coffee, comes from farms in tropical regions all over the world?

While your local café may offer a tried and true decaf blend, we’re excited to see more and more single origin Swiss Water® decaf options on the menu for coffee passionate people to discover their new favorite decaf. As roasters embrace a wider range of decaf choices, decaf lovers can experience the same subtle complexity and terroir that “regular” drinkers have been enjoying for years. Not sure where to start looking for your favorite origin? Here’s a snapshot of some of the largest coffee-growing regions in the world:

Coffee Region to Region

Africa

Africa is the birthplace of coffee cultivation—specifically Ethiopia—and coffees from this continent are renowned for delicate flavors (you’ll hear “tealike” often), red fruit, and citrusy brightness. Africa’s coffee-growing climates are diverse and include some exceptionally high-altitudes that result in nuanced, fascinating flavors.

Asia-Pacific

Notable for earthy, herbaceous flavors with an intense body. Coffees from areas like Indonesia are beloved for their sultry, rich notes.

Latin America

Spanning Mexico, Central America, and South America, coffees from the equatorial heart of Latin America are most known for balanced notes of stonefruit, berries, and cocoa. Latin American coffees are often used as the backbone for espresso blends, but are delicious in their own right. They often have flavor profiles people are most familiar with and comforted by in a cup of coffee. Whether it’s a fruit-forward Colombian coffee or a creamy Brazil, you’ll come back to Latin American coffees again and again.

Of course, within each geographic region are countless smaller regions each with subtle differences in terroir that can affect flavor—and how a coffee is processed at the farm, roasted at the roastery, and brewed will also all affect its flavor. One thing’s for sure: when a coffee is decaffeinated with the Swiss Water® Process, you can expect a delicious decaf with flavor that’s true to its origin characteristics.
