Coffee Trader

***This position is based in Seattle, WA, USA***

Reporting to the VP of Trading, the Coffee Trader is responsible for sales of decaffeinated coffees to the matrix of coffee importers, brokers and dealers who distribute to specialty coffee roasters, as well as to roasters who are serviced directly by SWD. This position will entail management of existing clients as well as new business development. The Coffee Trader will build relationships with industry partners including importers and roasters. Promotion of SWD products, process and brand will be integral to this position.

 

Major Accountabilities

  • Sales of Swiss Water Decaffeinated products
  • Development of new business
  • Maintain and strengthen existing client relationships
  • Represent SWDCC at tradeshows and key industry events (e.g. Roaster’s Guild), promote SWDCC’s premium positioning, and promote the benefits of the Swiss Water® Process
  • Recommend new products to supplement current product offerings
  • Analysis of green and decaffeinated coffee through sample roasting and cupping
  • Portfolio analytics and forecasting
  • Analyze and report on industry news and trends

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Experience in sales, preferably green coffee trading
  • Experience roasting, cupping, and/or quality assurance experience within the specialty coffee industry
  • Strong knowledge of coffee characteristics, cup profiles and quality of various origins
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, exercise good judgment and multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • Contract management skills and effective negotiation skills
  • SCAA instructional experience a plus

Education & Experience

  • 5+ years direct work experience in the coffee industry, preferably with green coffee trading experience, including green coffee sales, cupping and sample roasting
  • College degree and/or relevant work experience

Performance & Role Expectations

You are expected to:

  • Travel domestically and/or internationally up to 12 times per year for up to 1 week at a time
  • Travel to Vancouver monthly (day trip)
  • Represent the Company at industry trade shows and other events
  • Champion the Swiss Water® brand and the quality positioning of the brand in relation to the specialty coffee trade
  • Keep abreast of developments in the green coffee and roasted coffee industries
  • Work with and maintain specialized coffee lab equipment
  • Make decisions with a clear understanding of and focus on company objectives and goals.
  • Build detailed understanding of the Swiss Water® Process and its decaffeinated competitors to enable communication to stakeholders
