Our Small Batch Series started in 2012, featuring limited editions of hyper-seasonal, highly traceable coffees we’re particularly proud of. These offerings change a few times per year, and show off some of the best of the best in coffees that we’ve identified as not only inherently delicious and complex, but which also taste wonderful without caffeine.
Our current offering is from the Muungano Cooperative in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Muungano co-op is a wonderful example of the power that working as a cooperative can have. Over the last ten years, the cooperative has grown to more than 4,400 members—almost half of whom are women. In addition to their focus on gender equity, the co-op’s work in prioritizing member engagement has led to integrating a wide range of ethnic groups from the Kivu region.
Muungano coffee is a Bourbon variety grown between 1,480–2,000 meters above sea level. it’s a fully washed coffee, dried on raised beds, and is certified Fair Trade and Organic. In the cup, we think this coffee is wildly complex, tasting like strawberry, black currant, cherry, rhubarb, lime, and chocolate.
