As consumers, we are faced with choices when making purchasing decisions. From the price we’re willing to pay, to the array of different products and brands, to the perceived benefit we are expecting.
Coffee is no different. The same, single origin coffee can be organic, Fairtrade, Fairtrade organic, and even Kosher! But what do these different designations mean? Why are they important? Below are a few certifications that Swiss Water® Decaf coffee qualified to carry, and why we hold them in high regards.
Organic – Refers to coffee that has been grown in accordance with organic farming standards which exclude the use of fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals. These strict requirements also apply to storage, processing, packaging, labelling and shipping. Organic standards must be adhered to throughout all production and distribution stages – all the way from the crop to the cup. Swiss Water® Process and our decaffeination facility conform to the rigorous standards set out by the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA).
Fairtrade – Fairtrade Certification signifies that products were produced in an ethical manner. Where coffee is concerned, Fairtrade connects farmers, businesses, and consumers in sustainable and meaningful ways. Fairtrade supports farmer and worker communities by focusing on equitable prices and working conditions, healthy living situations, and economic sustainability. Swiss Water® Process’ fair trade certification is provided by Fairtrade Canada.
Rainforest Alliance –The Rainforest Alliance doesn’t only strive to conserve the environment, but is also committed to protecting workers, their families, and communities. Their efforts to guarantee that coffee farmers and their families are respected, paid decent wages, and have access to education and medical care help them achieve long-lasting sustainability.
UTZ – UTZ Certified is a program dedicated to sustainable farming. UTZ certification requires its coffee growers to abide by two sets of guidelines, and in return helps ensure farmers get the resources they need. In efforts to create a more sustainable world, UTZ’s mission is to make sustainable farming the new normal.
Kosher – Refers to food items conforming to Jewish dietary standards. Swiss Water® Process’ entire product offering of decaf coffee is Kosher, and meets the strictest standards of kosher law – Kashrus. Our Kosher certification is verified on an annual basis by the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of British Columbia.
These are just a few of the certifications that Swiss Water® Decaf is proud to display on our products. They all focus on different aspects, be it health, religion, ethics, or concern for the environment. If you’d like to read more about the certifications above, click here.
