History of the SWISS WATER® Decaffeination Process

The history of decaff coffee goes back to the early 1930s when a chemical-free decaffination method was discovered in Switzerland. The secret ingredient in the decaff process? Water!

The water decaff process was revitalized almost 40 years later when technology finally caught up to the ideas first developed in the the early history of decaff coffee.  In 1989, a new facility (now the only SWISS WATER® Process caffine removal facility in the world) was built near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, a region prized for its pure water – essential for the decaff process.

Previously owned by Kraft General Foods, the Swiss Water Decaffinated Coffee Company is a public company that is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) under the symbol SWS.UN.

Today, the 100% chemical-free, patented SWISS WATER® Process is used by premium roasters in removing caffine to produce decaff coffees that are demanded by discerning decaf drinkers around the world.  We decaffinate coffee to a 97% caffine removal standard, in compliance with US FDA guidelines, which is equivalent to the Canadian/International standard of 99.9% caffine free.

The history of decaff coffees began more than 70 years ago. Today our decaffination process is used by roasters and retailers in many countries throughout the world, including the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, Japan, and Spain to name a few.
